Saving life, health and money – EU workshop on Road Safety in Brussels

A workshop on road safety was held by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) on Monday February 27th 2012 10 am - 4.30 pm. The organisers of the workshop were the two projects PILOT4SAFETY (www.fehrl.org) and BALTRIS (www.baltris.org). The aim of the workshop was to present the necessary steps towards a European standardized training and certification of road safety experts.

Road safety is a major concern in Europe and the EU Directive 2008/96/CE on road infrastructure safety management foresees various types of safety checks, as well as training and certification procedures of road safety experts. A current problem is the lack of transnational cooperation on the organisation of training for road safety auditors and inspectors and the certification process. This results in a great diversity of training courses and transposition procedures across the European Union.

The workshop “Road Safety: Common European Training for safer roads and society” highlighted the importance of the road safety operations and will give important advice to regional authorities about this matter. Speakers from the European Commission, EESC and from members of PILOT4SAFETY and BALTRIS projects made presentations.
